ArchiCraft: DIY Tensegrity Structures by SUTDIO

Singapore Archifest 2020 ArchiCraft DIY Tensegrity Structures

Human bodies, the Georgia dome and the Singapore Flyer all benefit from the flexibility, toughness, and efficiency of tensegrity structures. Made from a combination of the words tension and integrity, the word tensegrity is used to describe structures that are primarily supported by continuous tension systems with discrete or disconnected rigid elements.

In architecture, tensegrity offers sculptural effects like those seen in Kenneth Snelson’s sculptures and even the “floating table” that has recently gone viral online. This hands-on workshop will explore new systems of tensegrity allowing participants to get some experience building architectural model kits and manipulating a 4m diameter tensegrity prototype.

Instructor:
Prof. Kenneth Tracy, Assistant Professor, Architecture and Sustainable Design, Singapore University of Technology and Design

Date: 27 September 2020
Time: 2pm – 4.30pm
Fees: $33 per person
Venue: Edible Garden City, Event Hall, 60 Jalan Penjara, Singapore 149375 (Limited capacity with safe distancing in place)

Singapore ArchiFest 2020 ArchiCraft Digital Art and Architecture using LEGO Bricks

This workshop is centred on using LEGO bricks to create iconic architectural or cultural symbols that represent the Singapore identity. Participants will be taught on how to use the software to create virtual LEGO models, following which they will be given some time to independently work on a model of their choosing.

Studio 2.0 is free software provided by Bricklink and owned by LEGO. It has several built-in functionalities (such as creating submodels, collating part and price list, and rendering 3D images).

Design Your Ultimate ‘Resilient Home’ Competition by BEEP Lab

Through just 3 exciting design webinars, learn how architecture plays an important role in our daily lives, and how it can be used to bridge and heal people across the globe. All participants will also be eligible for the design competition on how architecture can save the world, with attractive prizes to be won!

Singapore Archifest 2020 Design Clinic

Date: 26 September – 2 October 2020
Fees: $69.00 (S$179.00 for teams of 3)
e-Venue: Online

Design Clinic 1: Architectural History

This webinar aims to raise awareness, appreciation and action of how participants can play a participatory role in the evolution of their built environment and social communities.

Participants will learn about the relevance of architecture’s saving nature in response to worldwide, problematic phenomena.
They will also gain a historical overview of how architecture has significantly allowed society to thrive, through the case study of HDB in Singapore.

Finally, participants will also gain a broader perspective of how their built environment has evolved over the centuries based on revolutionary inventions and behaviours. They will then be encouraged to put these theories into practice through a design competition.

Date: 26 September 2020
Time: 10am – 11am

Design Clinic 2: Architectural Basics

This webinar aims to democratise the skills and tools architects utilise to plan, draft and turn visions into reality.
Through sketching exercises, participants will be introduced to various frameworks of design conceptualisation, such as function and form.

They will also learn basic terminology by being exposed to architectural drawings of building plans, sections, elevations, etc.
Finally, they will be able to put these skills into practice through a hands-on, supervised model-making session, developing their craftwork and creative thinking skills.

Date: 26 September 2020
Time: 3.30pm – 4.30pm

Design Clinic 3: Architectural Presentation

This webinar aims to equip participants with vital soft skills to maximise the impact of their design presentations.
Participants will learn how to organise their drawings and models clearly, and how to pitch them in a coherent, engaging and efficient manner.

They will also learn how to give constructive feedback to one another and properly document their works for portfolio purposes.

These practices will streamline the work process participants will encounter while they prepare their designs throughout the competition phase.

Date: 2 October 2020
Time: 1pm – 3pm

Virtual Forum

Archifest 2020 SP x SUTD Forum – Biomimesis in the Age of Climate Change

Singapore ArchiFest 2020 SP Forum Biomimesis

“If a house were a thing made by nature…” – Aristotle

The Forum first reviews selected histories and philosophies of biomimesis, leading to fresh views in the approach and translation of nature as design in the age of Climate Change. This enquiry has recently been delved into through a workshop conducted recently in the School of Architecture and Built Environment in Singapore Polytechnic.

The workshop seeks to discover possible biomimetic design solutions for the built environments through an intense ideation process with teams of students looking at different biomimetic strategies. Preliminary works from the workshop will be presented during the forum. Alternative approaches to biomimesis will be presented by speakers from both SP.ABE and SUTD.ASD.

Speakers:
Dr Faris Hajamaideen, Director, School of Architecture and Built Environment, Singapore Polytechnic
Dr Choo Thian Siong, Lecturer, School of Architecture and Built Environment, Singapore Polytechnic
Fa’izan Shah Lecturer, School of Architecture and Built Environment, Singapore Polytechnic
Prof. Christine Yogiaman, Assistant Professor, Architecture and Sustainable Design, Singapore University of Technology and Design

Moderator:
Prof. Michael Budig, Assistant Professor, Architecture and Sustainable Design, Singapore University of Technology and Design

Date: 3 October 2020
Time: 3.30pm – 6pm
Fees: Free
