Founded in 2017 by Ms. Ashley Woo, BioAcumen Global began as a biotechnology company specialising in lyophilisation (freeze-drying) of PCR test kits for room-temperature storage and transportation.

Over time, the company’s proprietary freeze-drying technology found a new application in helping mothers preserve their breast milk. Through freeze-dried breast milk services in Singapore offered by LyoBB Services, Ashley and her team introduced a solution to a growing challenge faced by many breastfeeding mothers: limited freezer space, short storage lifespan of frozen milk, and the need for more flexible feeding options.

Freeze-dried breast milk refers to breast milk that has had its moisture removed under controlled conditions, allowing it to be preserved for long-term storage without refrigeration.

Since 2022, LyoBB has become the first ISO-certified lab in Singapore to offer freeze-dried breast milk services, converting fresh breast milk into a convenient breast milk powder that can be stored long-term and rehydrated when needed. This process allows breast milk to be converted into a stable breast milk powder that is easy to store, transport, and use when needed.

The idea of freeze-drying breast milk was first explored during the pandemic, when the team recognised the potential of this technology to support mothers. However, due to operational demands at the time, the project was only fully developed and launched in 2022.

For Ashley, the biggest challenge was not the science behind freeze-drying but gaining trust from mothers. Concerns around safety, hygiene, and nutrient retention are natural when it comes to infant nutrition.

“Our team strictly controls every step of the process. We personally collect breast milk from homes to ensure it remains frozen during transport. Temperature, humidity, hygiene, and equipment operations are carefully monitored throughout the freeze-drying process. The final product is breast milk powder, sealed in airtight packaging, making it convenient for storage, travel, and daily use. It has been a meaningful solution for many mothers.”

This meticulous approach has led to growing trust in LyoBB’s breastmilk preservation services. To date, more than 1,500 mothers in Singapore have used the service, with many citing convenience, reduced milk wastage, and flexibility as key benefits, especially for working mothers or those who travel frequently.

Compared to traditional frozen breast milk, freeze-dried breast milk offers a longer shelf life and greater convenience, especially for travel or situations where freezer storage is not available.

LyoBB also offers personalised, one-on-one packaging options. Some mothers choose to freeze-dry breast milk expressed at different times separately, allowing them to monitor potential food sensitivities in their babies. This level of flexibility is rarely available in standardised services.

While freeze-drying technology itself can be replicated, maintaining consistent quality requires strong technical expertise, strict protocols, and a dedicated team, which are essential for services involving mothers and infants.

Ashley acknowledges that working with breast milk comes with responsibility and risk, but believes innovation is necessary.

“Someone has to take the first step. Without the willingness to try something new, industries cannot evolve. We hope to bring meaningful innovation to mothers and support them in their breastfeeding journey.”

Looking ahead, Ashley plans to expand LyoBB’s freeze-dried breast milk services across Southeast Asia. Since 2024, a Vietnamese company has licensed LyoBB’s technology, and there are plans in place to enter Malaysia and Thailand by 2027.
