A 10th Anniversary Production by Paper Monkey Theatre
ROMANCE OF MISTAKES
A Mandarin Musical Comedy about True Love
8-10 March 2019, Drama Theatre, School of the Arts

In celebration of her 10th Anniversary, Paper Monkey Theatre proudly presents Romance of Mistakes with an intricate cast of beautifully crafted Thunderbolt Puppets from Taiwan. This original Mandarin musical production will be held on 8-10 March 2019 at the Drama Theatre, School of the Arts.

Romance of Mistakes is a pantomime of a series of seemingly unfortunate events that resulted from mistaken identities and misrepresented love. Liu Yuyan chanced upon a scholar Bian Ji at the Flower Festival and it was love at first sight for the maiden and the scholar! Feeling excited, Yuyan rushed home to inform her parents of the wonderful news. Alas! What seemed like a simple affair became a complex love game when instead of inviting Bian Ji over to discuss the marriage, the muddle-headed housekeeper invited the tyrant, Zhou Tong!

Paper Monkey Theatre strives to create theatrical puppet productions for children and family entertainment that are based on Asian stories and traditional puppetry but with a contemporary approach. In celebration of her 10th Anniversary, the Company will for the very first time, present a full cast of 40 exquisite Thunderbolt Puppets in this Mandarin musical comedy, which are painstakingly hand-made by Mr Hsu Chien-Jhang, who is a famous master puppet artisan from Taiwan.

Romance of Mistakes Paper Monkey cast

Adapted from a classic Beijing Opera, Romance of Mistakes is written and directed by the Artistic Director of Paper Monkey Theatre, Benjamin Ho, with the music composed by the talented Liong Kit Yeng. Romance of Mistakes premiered in 2013 as the Company’s 5th Anniversary production. Similar to the premier in 2013, this year’s production will feature 19 original songs in varied styles, including rock, tango, pop and with Chinese music elements. The lyrics are humorous yet modern. The puppeteers will be singing live and manipulating the puppets at the same time, which is a challenging feat but will provide audiences with wonderful live theatre experience.

This production will see changes made to the cast with some actors taking on different roles such as Edric Hsu who will play the role of Bian Ji instead of as Master Liu in the 2013 production, and Eleanor Tan who will finally perform Wang Yuan Yuan, and sing songs which had been specially written for her then but unfortunately was unable to perform due to schedule conflict with another project that she was involved in. The role of tyrant Zhou Tong, will once again be performed by Andy Yew, who is a very experienced puppeteer and has played the key role of Monkey King in Paper Monkey Theatre’s last production of The True Monkey King.

In addition, Paper Monkey Theatre believes in the importance of introducing young audiences to puppetry and theatre as an art form hence several performances have been specially planned for schools to bring their students on 6-8 March 2019, with 2 shows at 10am and 3pm. The students will get to have an enriching learning experience as they get to appreciate both the art of puppetry and Chinese culture.

Romance of Mistakes is supported by the Arts Fund, Singapore Chinese Culture Centre, Chinese Language and Culture Fund, Promote Mandarin Council, Berries, and Pek Sin Choon.
