Hands-on experiences and activities tend to encourage a lifelong love for learning and motivate students to be an active participant of their own learning. The Amazing Science-X Challenge provides students with a platform to demonstrate an astute understanding of physical science concepts. Teams ranging from primary schools all the way to college and universities from different tertiary education participated in this exciting competition that tests their wits, ideas and skills.

The 7th Amazing Science-X Challenge (ASXC) came to a closure on 18 September 2015, with a prize presentation and closing ceremony at Science Centre Singapore (SCS). After two days of judging, a total of 22 medals – 4 Gold, 10 Silver and 8 Bronze – were presented to winning teams from different schools across four categories.

The annual event invites students of all ages to build outstanding exhibits that are engaging and captivating for audiences, yet at the same time are able to demonstrate various science concepts in a clear and concise manner. This year, the 125 teams vying for top honours put together a number of fascinating experiments, cleverly using science to demonstrate phenomena including invisibility, a colour-changing dress and a fire tornado.

The New Age Parents was lucky to speak to the winning team of Category A. 3 primary five boys, Patrick, Zenden and Sanjaay from Riverale Primary School, shared about their learning experiences and take-away through this competition.

“This was our first time participating (in this contest) and it was very exciting. We managed to express our creativity. We had a lot of learning points, one of them is learning how to be determine or not give up so easily when the experiments didn’t go our way… We find this a place to learn science instead of a competition.”

The 3 little winners from Riverale Primary School were all smiles when they received their prizes from Ms Tan Yen Yen, Chairman of Science Centre Singapore.

No doubt that learning through life experiences are more valuable and fun than rote learning!
