Light Together Bras Basah. Bugis 2026
📅 1 August to 5 September 2026
1. Wandering Spirits Unbound by Roger Ng Wei Lun
📍 Stamford Place

Wandering Spirits Unbound reimagines Singapore’s foundational mythologies by gathering mythical creatures, including the fierce swordfish, Kusu Island‘s tortoise, Pulau Ubin’s legendary animals, Sang Nila Utama’s lion, the elusive Monkey Man and the trickster Sang Kancil, into a surreal journey through the Bras Basah.Bugis district. The work incorporates Peranakan and batik motifs as a nod to Armenian Street’s identity as a Craft x Design hub.
These tales have lingered in the hearts of generations of Singaporeans and, through this artwork, are manifested as invisible custodians of the land who have never truly left. By treating them as wandering spirits of the island, Wandering Spirits Unbound invites viewers to reconnect with the whimsical, ghostly, and profound cultural landscape that endures just beneath the surface.
2. Voyage of Icons by Howie Kim
📍 National Museum of Singapore 1 – 12 August 2026

Voyage of Icons is an animated projection mapping artwork that reimagines Singapore’s local folklore as a fluid, ever-evolving tapestry. Instead of literal historical retelling, the artwork weaves together a dynamic mix of familiar cultural icons, echoing how myths are often naturally formed through shared memories.
Utilising a whimsical illustrative style, the artwork transforms the facade of the National Museum of Singapore into a joyful visual journey. Audiences of all ages are invited to spot familiar fragments of their heritage and piece together their own vibrant narratives, celebrating the diverse voices that shape Singapore’s stories.
3. Plant chilli then no rain! by Arup
📍 Reflection Pool @ Bras Basah MRT Station

Plant chilli then no rain! stacks larger-than-life chillies and onions onto glowing skewers, paying homage to a local belief believed to ward off rain. Playful yet familiar, the installation reimagines a humble folk practice at an urban scale. The warm, diffused light gently radiates from within, creating a cosy, inviting environment for gathering.
Audiences are invited to sit, linger, and share memories of superstitions that have been passed on through oral tradition, and continue to shape everyday life. These moments prompt reflection on people’s relationship with nature, and the enduring human desire to influence forces beyond our control.
4. Touch wood! by Arup
📍 Artsplace @ Waterloo Centre

Rooted in the belief of “touching wood” to ward off bad luck, Touch wood! transforms a familiar phrase into an interactive spatial experience. A sculptural tree with softly glowing spheres animates the space through gentle pulses of light, drawing visitors closer.
By “touching wood”, the tree comes alive with dynamic lighting, giving visible form to the act of seeking protection and averting misfortune.
The work evokes shared, cross-cultural beliefs and highlights how everyday superstitions persist as living expressions of hope, caution, and memory.
5. A Walk Through Mythical Singapore by HeritageSG
📍 Stamford Walkway

A Walk Through Mythical Singapore transforms Stamford Walkway into a captivating immersive journey inspired by the legendary creatures of Singapore’s folklore.
Divided into three enchanting realms – Sea, Land & Sky – visitors step into a mythical world where stories come to life. Dive beneath the waves and swim alongside the swordfishes of The Legend of Redhill and the magical giant tortoise said to have formed Kusu Island.
Venture through lush jungles in the footsteps of Sang Nila Utama, encountering the majestic lion that inspired the founding of Singapore. Then look to the heavens, where mighty Chinese dragons and soaring Garudas command the skies in a breathtaking display of power and wonder.
