Let’s face it, not many people would like to be associated with this domesticated hoofed mammal with a snout that oinks. Its image is often linked to being dirty, smelly and often clumsy.

English idioms inspired by pig are also not spared from sounding derogatory. In Chinese, we occasionally address someone who makes silly mistake as “pig head” out of anger or we use “greedy pig” to describe someone who gorges.

Contrary to popular belief, this animal which belongs to the wild boar family, is actually quite intelligent as compared to many other animals in this world.

It likes to be clean and many of its body parts have been proven useful for human consumptions including its skin and bristles which have been used for clinical research and paintbrushes respectively.

From the Chinese traditions, pig, together with cow and goat, are known as the 3-Sacrifice to be slaughtered and prepared for the worshipping of deities or prayers to ancestors even till today.

In the study of feng shui and Chinese astrology, pig is ranked as the last zodiac sign which belongs to the water element. It represents the 10th month of the Solar calendar year and governs 9 pm to 11 pm of a day.

Although many injustices have been created on this pathetic swine, it does have its adorable side – in case you have forgotten that we save up using piggy bank.

In certain cultures, including the Chinese, the pigs are used as symbol of luck and fortune. In fact, suckling pig is almost a must-have during wedding and other auspicious events.

The Anatomy of our Chinese Name

In the next few paragraphs of this article, I am going a bit more in depth to share with you Chinese characters and names that are considered auspicious for the pig zodiac. If you are planning for a 2019 baby, or thinking of better names for yourself,  you can refer to this write-up as a guide.

But before I jump into that, let me provide you with a basic understanding of this Chinese Name System (八字生肖姓名学) that we are using.

First and foremost, the Chinese surname represents one’s relationship with parents, whether he or she is well provided for by the family, a person’s intelligence, academic performance during primary and secondary school, creativity, status, reputation and so on. So, having the appropriate surname enables one to enjoy a good head-start in life.

Now, the issue is that most of us are not able to change our surname if things do not turn out as what we want. In this instance, we would then have to rely on the careful selection of middle and last Chinese characters in the name to mitigate or neutralize the negative influence of the surname.

The middle name influences a person’s relationship with peers, siblings and spouse. In addition, it also talks about Emotional Quotient (EQ) and a person’s self-esteem. As for the last name, it governs the career and money luck of a person, affinity with kids and immunity.

General Characteristics & Destiny of People who are born in the Year of the Pig

The ancient masters examined the likes and dislikes of pig and then proceeded to extrapolate and find the Chinese characters that can complement the idiosyncrasy of this zodiac sign.

It is said that people who are born into the pig zodiac sign tend to be feisty and more hot-tempered in nature. When they are a child, they are lively and energetic. If they can receive proper guidance to channel their vigor into right use, for instance, cultivate their interests in sports, they can grow up to enjoy great achievements in that arena.

The optimistically-inclined pig people tend to be more self-righteous and competitive. They can go fiercely all the way out to achieve their goals. However, this can potentially become their Achilles heel when they are out in the society especially if they are oblivious of others feelings and the consequences. Unless they remain humble and sincere, it will be tough for them to garner the help of true friends when in need.

The destiny path of people born in pig year is usually saddled with some extents of challenges and sacrifices during the first half of their life. While they can be smart and talented, they have to inject more efforts in studies and their career in order for them to excel after age 40.

One thing worth mentioning is that their ultimate success in life is largely determined by how well they plan and decide on their various goals during their youth.

In a nutshell, when you are selecting the names for your baby, we should choose those Chinese characters that can accentuate the positive attributes of the pig because there is an affiliation and resonance of energy between the zodiac sign and the way the character was scripted and evolved from the Chinese oracle.




What Chinese Surname will provide a good head-start for your Pig Baby?

Let us now take a deeper look at the dos and don’ts when you are selecting the name for your baby. First of all, it would be preferable for pig babies to be born into families carrying surname like:

楊、姜、田、黃、苗、游、康、李、洪、江、池、沈、溫、梁、金、柳、宋、林、季、幸、柏、茆、梅、程、湯、黎、葉、萬、盧、陳、蒙、蒲、豐、荘 etc.

It does not favour surnames such as:

朱、徐、倪、佟、章、熊、馬、許、馮、丁、張、連、毛、袁、侯、申、蕭、顧、龐、龍、汪、龔、農、鄭、斐、鄔、王、尤、文、尹、巴、仇、史、包 etc.

The approach to selecting good names for your baby is a rigorous and holistic one because not only there is a need to ensure the names complement the baby’s destiny chart, individual Chinese character within the name must also contain the right sound, right shape that ultimately create the right result for the child in all aspects of his or her life. It is also of paramount importance that the given name is compatible with both parents’ Chinese Name and zodiac sign.

In fact, many parents and adults nowadays are seeking help from name experts to enhance or improve their study, romance, career luck and even a child’s behaviour.

What Chinese characters are suitable for babies born in the year of Pig?

We have earlier discussed about the general characteristics of the pig zodiac sign which provides the fundamental knowledge to allow us to select Chinese characters that are appropriate for them.

The following Chinese characters or radicals are some examples that are considered auspicious for people born in the Pig year：

琳、杞、榮、林、柔、棟、森、楊、楚、村、松、樺、逸、東、木、栋、迎、羊、美、羚、羲

In the study of Ba Zi, such characters or radicals like 木、卯、羊 form a 三合 (San He) or 3-Harmony relationship with pig which is extremely powerful and auspicious. If such word is used in the last name.

For example, it will strongly promote career and money luck. For a baby, it will also strengthen the immune system. For your information, Pig, Rabbit and Goat form this trinity.

妞、紐、鈕、炄、嘉、均、生、牲、笙、性、星、臣、亚、子、字、李、水、永、泳、泉、冰、清、涵、港、孝

In the study of BaZi, such characters or radicals 丑、子、水 form a 三会 (San Hui) or 3-Seasonal Winter relationship with pig which is another auspicious set of combination.

For instance, if such word is used in the middle name, it will strongly enhance a person’s marriage luck, relationship with peers and confidence level. For a child, it will also strengthen the character development. For your information, Pig, Rat and Ox form this relationship.

国、园、同、宏、定、富、閎、广、厂、姗、册、稐、谷、容、戶、門、康、廉、田、莆

Since pig is by and large a domesticated animal, it feels protected with roof, fence or shelter over its head. Having shapes of words like 穴，门，广，册 in one’s name means stability in career and relationship, supportive relatives, friends and smooth sailing life.

和、利、莉、秀、香、蘇、秉、豆、登、米、菊、凯、科、益、淑、 豐、豊

Although pig is regarded as omnivorous, it prefers to eat grain, cereal, maize and rice. The presence of radicals like 禾，豆，米 in a person’s name will usher good support in life, plenty of helpful people and easier to achieve success in society.

酉、羽、非、金、鴻、翁、廖、票、鈞 鵬、鵑、雀、雁、兆、翡、飛、雄

The Chinese words here carry the radical of 酉 or metal element. Since pig belongs to water element, in this instance, the metal will produce or enhance the water energy which is deemed as auspicious.




少、小、士 、雀

It is good to see radicals or words like 小 because pig is cute and well protected when it is small but when it grows up it is to be slaughtered and sacrificed for consumptions. So, using such words in the name, but not advisable to be used by ladies, will make the person popular and well-doted by spouse or friends.

On the contrary, the below Chinese characters are considered inauspicious for people having Pig zodiac sign:

申、紳、呻、伸、珅、袁、遠、園、猿、侯、九、示

Regarded as a violation of the Chinese Name principle to see radical that represents monkey sign like申 or 袁 as it is a punishment on pig. If such word exists in the middle name, it will lead to stress in marriage and relationship with peers. If it is present in the last name, it will lead to issue with personal finances, challenges in career and even womb related disease.

通、建、廷、庭、起、宛、强、融、虹、凡、弘、引、凱、川、之

A taboo to see radicals like 辶 or 弓which symbolizes snake because in the study of Chinese Astrology, Pig and Snake have conflicting energies. Such type of conflict is also known to be one of the 6 clashes in the study of Ba Zi.

怡、性、悻、思、恩、慈、惠、意、愛、愉、慧、育、志、忠、念

No good to see 心、月、忄radicals because such words are associated with heart which is deemed as part of our flesh and pig does not like it. In this situation, the person having this character in their name will find that the effort he or she puts in does not equate to the reward.

文、政、典、兴、光、贤、宽、雯、霓、元、亮、友、儿、尤

Words that have shapes like 八, 又, 儿 imply the animal is running or escaping – usually from danger. It also denotes a lack of focus or determination. Overall, this signals instability in one’s life. Some of my clients that have such Chinese character in their last name often experience a hectic life in making money.

衣、丝、巾、采、萧、军、彦、布、市、帛、帝、常、彩、彭、彬、衫、杉、福、珍、礼、裕

The group of words here implies giving in and making sacrifices. They carry the meaning of clot and silk. When pig is dressed up, it is time to be slaughtered for either prayer or imperial ceremony.

山、岡、岳、岷、峻、崇、峰、崢、嵩、崑、崎、岱 、丘、瑞、良

No good to have「山」radical because it is deemed as dangerous for a pig to roam in the mountain. It is also quite challenging for it to look for food. This implies one has to put in a lot of effort in their endeavours but it does not guarantee a favourable outcome. Not smooth-sailing and a person’s life path can be filled with risks.

珍、玉、玨、皇、玲、瑾、瑜、琨、珂、珮、柱、珠、琼、玟、全

The presence of 王radical implies sacrifices. The closest that a pig can get near a King is when it is being made as an offering in the palace. A person’s name with this Chinese character often finds himself or herself making sacrifices for family, friends and relatives but with not much returns. The person will not be able to enjoy good life.

龍、辰、農、宸、震、晨、展、振、丽、庆、麒、麟、君、京、贝

A taboo to see龍 or 辰 radicals since in the Chinese Name System such words that symbolize dragon are also known to be: “big snake”, and they are deemed to be having clashing energies with the pig zodiac sign.

伸、伶、佳、仕、任、伯、佩、儂、依、介、徬、役、俊、仙、修

Radicals such as 人 and亻symbolize human. Although the pigs are reared by people and are well taken care of when they are small, they will still be slaughtered by people when they grow up.

晶，喬、單、嘉、品、呂、器、嚴、哥、喜、煦、吉、昌、古、司

It is inauspicious for the pig to see names that contain「日」or「口」radicals because first of all when pig sees sunlight it implies hardship. In the ancient time, the ceremony for worshipping the heaven was mostly conducted in the day time.

Since pig is one of the animals to be used as an offering, seeing such word in the name implies sacrificing. Likewise, during the worship, mandarin orange was often stuffed into the open-mouth of the pig. So, this is the reason why the Chinese words here are deemed as bad choices.

竹、節、南、馮、馬、駿、透、烶、建、燊、炎、华、骅、然、烈

The words here carry fire element and it clashes with the pig zodiac which is water element. Such elemental clash is serious. It can lead to health issues relating to the heart and blood circulation, besides relationship problem or money losses.
