The enduring legend of King Arthur amidst 15,000 roses commemorates 60 years of Singapore-United Kingdom ties
The Rose Romance floral display explores the legend of King Arthur, where chivalry prevails and romance blooms amidst over 15,000 roses across 65 varieties
Synonymous with British culture as well as romance, roses bloom profusely throughout the landscape of Rose Romance (玫瑰之恋) in Flower Dome, amidst a reimagination of the legend of King Arthur. The timeless tale of love and honour, courage and chivalry unfolds across more than 15,000 roses from 65 varieties, including four making their debut at Gardens by the Bay.
In a quaint castle-village setting, step into a recreation of the real-life Caernarfon Castle in Wales – a UNESCO World Heritage Site said to have inspired the mythical kingdom of Camelot – and take a seat at the famous Round Table where King Arthur’s knights gathered. The sword in the stone stands amidst these scenes, which as the story goes, only the young Arthur could draw out when he was a boy, thus laying his claim to the throne.
Rose Romance is presented in collaboration with the British High Commission in Singapore, and marks 60 years of diplomatic ties between Singapore and the United Kingdom in the milestone year of SG60. The floral display was officially launched by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, and Second Minister for Finance and National Development Ms Indranee Rajah today, and runs until 20 July.
Gardens by the Bay CEO Mr Felix Loh said, “Roses symbolise love, beauty and friendship, and their range of colours makes them one of the most prized and beloved flowers in the world. This milestone SG60 year also marks 60 years of friendship between Singapore and the United Kingdom, and what better way to commemorate the special occasion than with roses—a flower that is not only inextricably linked to British culture, but also an ever-popular bloom among our visitors.”
This year, four rose hybrids make their debut at Gardens by the Bay:
- Rosa ‘Amadeus’, a vigorous climber with deep red, lightly scented blooms
- Rosa ‘Bianco’, a compact patio rose adorned with a profusion of pure white pompon-style flowers
- Rosa ‘Marchenzauber’, also known as Fairytale Magic, this creamy pink floribunda rose with an apricot centre enchants with its strong, sweet, and fruity fragrance
- Rosa ‘Violette Parfumée’, prized for its large violet-mauve flowers and award-winning scent. It received the Royal National Rose Society’s Fragrance Award for its rich, sweet floral notes with subtle spice
Equally captivating are roses that speak of love. Rosa ‘Deep Love’, with its velvety crimson petals, evokes passion and intensity, while Rosa ‘Duchess of Cornwall’ commemorates the union of the then Camilla Parker Bowles and Prince Charles, now King and Queen.
The rose landscape is further enriched with complementary blooms grown in-house by Gardens by the Bay’s horticulturists, including China asters, delphiniums, pelargoniums, pinks, salvias, and wild strawberries.
Beyond Arthurian myth, the rose remains an important English symbol. A Tudor-style house in the display alludes to the Wars of the Roses, a civil war between two rival houses represented by the red rose of Lancaster and the white rose of York. The conflict ended with the merging of both roses into the Tudor rose emblem, symbolising a united England. In another nod to notable architecture, visitors to Flower Dome are welcomed by a recreation of an elegant mansion in the Georgian style, which can be seen in many parts of London.
On loan from the British Club in Singapore are two suits of knight armour and a sword, which are on public display for the first time. Mr Andrew Collings, a horticulture partner from the United Kingdom, also contributed traditional Welsh love spoons for the display. These ornate spoons date back to the seventeenth century, and were traditionally handcrafted by young men as tokens of love for their other half.
On display are also iconic symbols of Britain such as the red telephone box, evoking nostalgia for a bygone era, as well as a red double-decker bus, which remain a familiar sight on London’s streets.
The Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines Portsmouth from the United Kingdom also performed at the launch of Rose Romance today. The public can experience the pomp, precision, and passion during a special 30-minute performance this Sunday, June 29 at 2pm, as the band marches from Supertree Grove to Flower Dome.
