The inaugural National Reading Day will be taking place on 30 July 2016 with a series of programmes and activities island-wide. Organised by the National Library Board (NLB), the National Reading Day is part of the National Reading Movement, and calls for all to set aside some time to Read More, Read Widely and Read Together.

The National Reading Day will be launched by Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Communications and Information on 30 July 2016, 10am. A key highlight of the celebrations is Read for Books, an initiative which will see a book donated to NLB’s kidsREAD club beneficiaries from less privileged families for every 10 people who read for 15 minutes.

Members of the public will also be able to visit the OneTeamSG cheer truck where TeamSG athletes will be sharing their book recommendations, as well as the Mini-MOLLY mobile library at the event.

Some Highlights from National Reading Day are:

  1. Read for Books: This is a programme that calls all to come together to read for a good cause. During the week of 23-30 July, supporting organisations will donate a book to NLB’s kidsREAD club beneficiaries from less privileged families for every 10 people who read for 15 minutes. This can be done either
  2. Singapore Sports Council Cheer Truck: Singapore Sports Council will also be partnering with NLB and be present on National Reading Day to recommend their favourite books to booth visitors. In the lead up to National Reading Day, certain athletes who will be present on Saturday will be engaging in storytelling sessions at various libraries.
  3. Display of a quilt: that features materials sourced from all over the world pieced together by a group of expatriates who bonded over their love for quilting and libraries – the final product is a quilt that features an image of a bookshelf with over 300 books.
  4. Mini-MOLLY: mobile library that will be open to the public to let them see what the mobile libraries look like.
