For children, by children: Children had a hand in shaping the offerings for Children’s Season 2024 and the new “Into the Hawkerverse” exhibition launching in conjunction with the festival.

Children's Season 2024

Celebrate innovation and creativity this Children’s Season with Children’s Museum Singapore (CMSG) and the Museum Roundtable (MR)! Helmed by CMSG for the first time, this year’s edition of the festival is anchored on the theme of “Innovation”, inviting young ones to explore various inventions, and inspiring them to think creatively. From 25 May to 23 June 2024, families will be able to enjoy a slew of exciting programmes across 21 participating MR museums and galleries. In conjunction with Children’s Season, CMSG will also be launching a new hawker-themed exhibition titled Into the Hawkerverse.

Mrs Wai Yin Pryke, Museum Director of CMSG, said: “Children have some of the most imaginative minds out there, and there’s no better way to celebrate Children’s Season than to encourage this creativity. This year, we are focusing on the theme of innovation to inspire children to think outside of the box and become pioneering changemakers. We have lined up exciting programmes for Children’s Season together with the launch of our newest exhibition Into the Hawkerverse, to engage children in joyful learning and instil in them a love for our museums from young.”

About the into the Hawkerverse Exhibition

The new exhibition “Into the Hawkerverse” introduces Singapore’s vibrant and indispensable hawker culture to children in a fun, immersive and interactive way. The exhibition is developed with inputs from children and aims to deepen their understanding and appreciation of hawker culture through play, hands-on activities, multisensory exploration and object-based learning.

Hawkerverse Exhibition CMSG

Children get to travel back in time to the exciting days of street hawkers, meet hawker culture heroes and listen to their stories, step into the big shoes of hawkers, discover the encyclopaedic array of hawker dishes and the careful considerations of hawker centre design, as well as glimpse into the future of hawker culture.

In the introductory gallery, visitors will be greeted by modern interpretations of street entertainment which existed alongside street hawkers. Here, they can explore a storyteller’s makeshift table, put up their own hawker-themed shadow puppet play, and guess the functions of different objects used by hawkers in the past.

Next, in the bygone world of street hawkers filled with sights and scents, visitors can imagine themselves as an unlicensed street hawker, don costumes and ‘escape’ from the teh gu (inspectors) while carrying their wares! Or they can explore various street stalls, and even try their hand at making the same sounds as the tok tok mee hawker. There is also an exploration area with tools of the hawker trade.

CMSG Into the Hawkerverse

Visitors will leave the past and enter the present and future chapters of the hawker culture story. In the present section, they can try running hawker stalls and experience the challenges of fulfilling food orders. Or they can take part in the multimedia ‘hawker master challenge’ to pull teh tarik, play a hawker food charade, invent the next star hawker dish, discover the extent of food wastage in Singapore and explore an interactive library which features endangered and extinct hawker foods. There are also activity tables for visitors to design their own hawker centre using LEGO bricks, and a relaxing dapao-themed corner for children. Lastly, in the future section, visitors can learn about unique machines used by hawkers to help them increase
productivity.

At the Play Pot, a dedicated playspace designed for children below 4 years old, children can play masak-masak at hawker stalls using local artisanal felt foods, learn about yummy and nutritious vegetables using ‘healthy-eating’ plates, ‘frolic’ in a mee goreng pool, practise returning and cleaning their crockery at the pretend-play washing shed, and more.
