A ceiling fan is undoubtedly a lifesaver in this humid climate – especially when saving money on electricity bills. And if you’re a family just moving into a new home, or looking to install a ceiling fan in your current abode, you may be overwhelmed by the choices out there.

Quality and safety should be the main priorities when choosing a fan, especially with young kids around the house. You also want a product that enhances your home’s comfort, while being energy-efficient and cost-effective as well.
Here are 6 factors to consider as you shop for the best ceiling fan to suit your needs.
Room size and ceiling height
You’ll need to choose a fan that fits your room size for maximum performance. Larger rooms require larger fans with wider blades to cool down the room. As a general guide, a ceiling fan with blade lengths between 55 to 60 inches fit larger rooms, while blade lengths between 44 to 56 inches are enough for smaller rooms. Do also bear in mind that HDB only allows ceiling fans with a maximum weight of 35kg.
Ceiling height should be taken into account as well. As a safety precaution, HDB requires the clearance height of the ceiling fan to be at least 2.4m from the floor level.
Safety
Ensure you only buy ceiling fans which come with the Singapore Safety Mark. It’s illegal for retailers to sell ceiling fans without a Safety Mark. Fans are controlled goods that need to be tested, so that they meet safety standards set out by the Consumer Product Safety Office.
While it may be tempting to buy cheap ceiling fans online from overseas vendors, you run the risk of dubious safety controls, as well as the fan being a fire hazard. Reputable local suppliers are always the best way to go.
Design
Of course, you’ll want to select a fan that fits your home’s theme, whether it’s Scandinavian, modern, industrial or eclectic. If you’re going for Scandinavian, a fan with wood grain finishing would fit your theme perfectly. If industrial is the name of the game, consider a metallic fan made of metal and aluminum. Those seeking an eclectic look are free to switch things up with juxtaposing elements!
Cost and energy-efficiency
Opt for an energy-efficient fan option to save on electrical bills while working from home. Fans with DC motors are a newer addition to household ceiling fans. They typically generate additional torque while consuming less than 70% of the power of a typical ceiling fan, through transforming electric energy into mechanical energy as they rotate.
They are also silent, have smaller motors (resulting in smaller, lighter fans), and use energy efficiently, prolonging a fan’s life span. The higher torque also leads to faster startup speeds.
Additional features
Look out for fans with additional features. Some come with built-in lighting, which is a great solution for saving space and money. LED lighting is recommended as it’s more energy-efficient.

Lots of ceiling fans now come with remote controls too, so you can turn them on or control speeds from the comfort of your couch.
A reputable brand
Purchase your fan from a reputable brand, in the event of any warranty or damage claim. It’s important that your supplier has knowledgeable and prompt customer service, who can recommend the best options and provide timely support. Consider other factors such as industry experience, customer reviews, fan prices, delivery time and payment options.
