According to the latest survey of 1,000 Singaporean family travellers commissioned by HomeAway®, 3 in 4 Singaporean families said that they saw overseas vacations as a chance to spend quality bonding time together.
But coordinating multiple travel dates, flights, packing for the family, and searching for accommodation and activities that suit everyone – sounds like a logistical nightmare to many when it comes to family travel. Rather than putting the ‘f’ in family fun, it is ‘f’ for frustration instead.
HomeAway® shares tips to help create a fun and memorable family holiday, with as little frustration as possible!
1. Involve Everyone When Deciding Where to Stay
Getting input from everyone on their must-have(s) for the accommodation – such as good location, spaciousness, value-for-money and amenities like a kitchen and a pool – can help to narrow down the choices.
Thankfully, the whole holiday homes and filtering tools (e.g. “low-allergen environment” / “children welcome” / “good for families”) available on the HomeAway website would help you find that perfect holiday home.

2. Plan Ahead
Planning ahead is always useful in many ways – be it sourcing for cheaper flight tickets, or even checking with the holiday homeowner if there are the necessities like a bottle warmer or sterilizer, board games, etc. available in the home prior to the trip!
3. Build In ‘Down’ Time
After a busy day checking out the sights and sounds of the country you are visiting, it is also important to factor in ‘down’ time in the travel itinerary. Having dedicated family time to rest and relax together does wonders in helping the family bond more!
With wonderful amenities like private pools and communal spaces for activities like a game of charades available in a holiday home, there are plenty of opportunities to create more family memories without the pressure of jumping from one tourist attraction to the next.
4. Cook Together
Enjoy the comforts of a home-cooked meal with local produce in a holiday home that comes with a fully-equipped kitchen. Have fun with your children / parents shopping for groceries at the local supermarket, before whipping up a great feast back home with everyone’s help.
After all, a family that cooks together, stays together!
5. Capture The Memories
One simple thing that families usually do not do enough of is to take pictures to document family vacations! Appoint the most ‘wefie’-savvy family member as the main photographer and capture the best moments of the time spent together.

6. Be Flexible
Last but not least, having an open mindset to changes in your plans and embracing them can go a long way to make the trip less stressful. In fact, it’s the unexpected that the family will recall ten, twenty years down the road!
