2018 marks the 35th Anniversary of Community Chest and 34 years since the introduction of Sharity, Community Chest’s mascot. To mark this momentous year, Community Chest aims to reach out to the next generation of givers, from both mainstream and special education schools, to inculcate the values of caring and sharing through the fourth edition of Sharity Day 2018!

Co-organised with Gardens by the Bay, this year’s Sharity Day theme is “From Caring to Inclusive”. The half-day event comprises an exciting line-up of activities including an original Sharity musical, the launch of the new Sharity animation episode, learning journeys within the garden domes as well as fringe activities. Students will be treated to a multi-sensory experience, interact and play while developing age-appropriate social, communication, motor and cognitive skills. These experiences from playing with peers of different abilities would allow children an opportunity to accept, respect one another and develop social and creative skills, physically and emotionally. Prior to the event, we also launched a hunt for people from the Sharity Generation, and lucky winners will be invited to attend the event!

The day’s event will also involve various persons with disabilities to showcase their talents and abilities for this meaningful event. Examples include Mr Allan Wong, a deaf horticulturist and actor who will be teaching the audience sign language; Ms Claire Teo, an aspiring dancer who is managing the sound design for the musical; Ms Mui Rui Yi, a wheelchair user who is the designer for the event; as well as Rex, a deaf student from Canossian School who will be the co-emcee.

Apart from the corporate contributors, many like-minded community partners will also support Community Chest in building an inclusive community. Sensational Play will be setting up a sensory room for the first time at Sharity Day, to provide children with special needs a safe space to relax. Green Nudge will be providing special recycling bins to collect used plastic bottles for an art installation. MINDS is also providing bottled water, produced with the help of persons with special needs.
