The sights and stories of Portugal make port at Gardens by the Bay for its first Portuguese-themed floral display, Sunflower Surprise: Garden by the Ocean in Flower Dome. Shaped by centuries of seafaring and known for its sun-soaked coastal towns, the display captures the country’s character through its maritime history, everyday traditions and agricultural heritage.

GBB Sunflower Surprise 2026

Journey through Alfama, one of Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhoods, before exploring Portugal’s coastal heritage through the striped houses of fishing town Costa Nova, a 6m-tall Belém Lighthouse, and the bow of a traditional Portuguese caravela.

Moving inland, the display highlights Portugal’s agricultural traditions through vineyards, olive groves, and cork oaks, alongside recreations of a historic Porto shopfront and Lisbon’s iconic street kiosks. Bringing the elements together are more than 5,000 sunflowers across 20 varieties, evoking the sunflower fields of the Portuguese countryside, including supersized varieties that can grow up to 1.8m tall.

Visitors can also look forward to Experience Portugal on Saturday, October 10 at Flower Field Hall adjoining Flower Dome, which offers a fuller taste of the country through Portuguese products such as pastéis de nata (custard tarts), canned goods, cheeses, cured ham and a selection of national wines.

The free programme will also feature folk dance performances, poetry sessions, Portuguese film screenings, family-friendly workshops and a marine conservation workshop in partnership with WWF Singapore
