A Community-Crafted Play Space Inspired by Local Wildlife
A vibrant new playground has taken shape at Toa Payoh N1 Neighbourhood Park, bringing fun and creativity to the heart of the community. The River Crab Playground, located at 9 Lorong 7 Toa Payoh, is a unique play space designed with input from nearly 2,000 residents, students, and local stakeholders, making it a true reflection of the neighbourhood’s spirit.
A Playground Shaped by the Community
Inspired by the Johora singaporensis, a rare freshwater crab native to Singapore, the playground features a mini obstacle course with climbing nets, slides, and interactive play elements that encourage active exploration. The design was chosen by residents for its distinctive look and engaging features, celebrating the connection to the nearby Kallang River.
Adding a personal touch, the playground’s rubber flooring showcases a special otter-themed design by Tee Jia Le, a student from First Toa Payoh Primary School, who won a community design competition. The playful artwork reflects the neighbourhood’s identity and creativity.

Fun for All Ages
Beyond the crab-inspired structure, the playground includes:
- A hammock swing for relaxed play
- Varied climbing challenges at different heights
- Slides and freestanding play equipment selected by local children
A New Landmark for Toa Payoh
The River Crab Playground joins Toa Payoh’s iconic Dragon Playground as a must-visit recreational spot, offering families a fresh and exciting place to gather. It is part of HDB’s Remaking Our Heartland (ROH) programme, which revitalises neighbourhoods with community-driven enhancements.
Minister for National Development Mr Desmond Lee shared, “This playground is a wonderful example of how residents can come together to shape their neighbourhood. Such projects strengthen bonds and create lasting memories for families.”
More Community Playgrounds Coming Soon
Residents can look forward to three more community-built playgrounds in Toa Payoh, Woodlands, and Pasir Ris, set to open later this year. Like the River Crab Playground and Adventure Playground @ Canberra, these new play spaces will be co-designed with residents to reflect the unique needs of each neighbourhood.
