Qn: What supplements are recommended for an 8-month-old baby to build up his immunity?

baby immunityAns: There are several measures parents can take to boost a baby’s immunity. Breastfeeding in the first six months of life; followed by weaning to a healthy, balanced diet would be the ideal nutrition. Babies should receive sufficient sleep and exercise, together with good personal hygiene and routine vaccination. Avoiding pollutants such as tobacco smoke and vehicle exhaust will provide a healthy environment for the baby.

Most babies do not need additional supplements to boost immunity, but if there are specific concerns, parents could consult their paediatrician regarding the use of prebiotics/probiotics or multivitamins. Prebiotics/probiotics have been shown in some studies to improve immune function. Supplementation with zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A, C and E may also be considered to improve immunity.
