As the rates of myopia, or near-sightedness, continue to rise among children in Singapore and across Asia, many parents are seeking effective solutions to manage this condition. One common question that arises is whether contact lenses are safe for children. Let’s explore this topic and dispel some myths surrounding the use of contact lenses for younger eyes.

The Childhood Myopia Epidemic
The prevalence of myopia in children is escalating at an alarming rate. In Singapore, the prevalence of myopia is among the highest in the world, with 65 percent of children being myopic by Primary 6. This trend is part of a broader global epidemic and the surge in myopia has serious implications for children’s long-term vision health and quality of life, including an increased risk of severe eye conditions such as glaucoma, retinal detachment, and myopic macular degeneration
Safety and Efficacy of Contact Lenses
Many parents worry about the safety of contact lenses for their children, questioning whether they might cause more harm than good. However, modern advancements have made contact lenses a viable and safe option for children. Single-use lenses, specifically designed for children, are an excellent choice. These myopia control soft contact lenses use proven technology to correct vision and manage myopia progression, incorporating a dual-focus design with alternating zones for vision correction and myopia treatment.
Myopia control soft contact lenses approved for managing myopia have been shown to be both effective and safe. Clinical trials, including a comprehensive seven-year study, confirm that these lenses provide clear vision and slow myopia progression, making them a valuable tool in long-term vision care. The study shows a 50 per cent reduction in myopia progression, with 90 per cent of eyes responding to the treatment. Nine out of 10 children prefer these lenses over spectacles, and children as young as 8 can use them independently. The safety profile is strong, with no serious adverse events.

Addressing Parental Concerns
One major concern among parents is whether children are too young to handle contact lenses. Many children adapt quickly, learning to put them on and take them off with practice. Modern contact lenses are designed for ease of use and hygiene, addressing common worries about safety and practicality. Moreover, these contact lenses can greatly enhance a child’s quality of life by improving social interactions, sports performance, and self-esteem. By removing the inconvenience and stigma of glasses, they help children participate more confidently in activities and sports, fostering a positive emotional and social experience.
Contact lenses are appropriate for children who are motivated and can handle basic hygiene practices. Opticians and eye care professionals can provide valuable resources, such as training videos and step-by-step guides, to assist parents and children in the initial learning process. Involving parents in this training and maintaining routine check-ups ensures proper lens management and supports a smooth transition to contact lens use.

Role in Managing Myopia Progression
The primary benefit of using contact lenses for myopia control is their ability to slow progression. Myopia control soft contact lenses create zones of defocused light on the peripheral retina, signalling the eye to slow its growth. This reduces the rate at which myopia worsens over time.
Research shows these lenses can cut myopia progression by about 50%, significantly stabilizing vision as children grow. Early use can reduce the risk of severe myopia-related complications later in life.

Making an Informed Decision
When considering contact lenses, factors like a child’s readiness, daily routine, and eye health are crucial. Consulting with an eye care professional for personalized advice is also essential.
In conclusion, contact lenses are a safe and effective option for managing myopia in children. By addressing common myths and understanding the benefits of modern contact lens technology, parents can make informed decisions for their children’s long-term vision health. As the myopia epidemic grows, embracing proven solutions like contact lenses can help safeguard our children’s overall eye health and future.
