Our distinctive Singapore Chinese culture is set to take centre stage once again with the return of SCCC Cultural Extravaganza (CE 2018) [华彩2018]. Held over three weeks at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC), from 18 May to 10 June, the public can look forward to a dynamic line-up of programmes that showcases the diversity and vibrancy of our local Chinese culture.

SCCC Cultural Extravaganza
Date: 18 May to 10 June 2018
Venue: Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (1 Straits Boulevard, Singapore 018906).

“The SCCC Cultural Extravaganza returns to mark the first year of SCCC’s official opening as a centre of excellence for everyone to appreciate and learn about the diversity of Chinese culture in Singapore. We want the Extravaganza to be a platform for local Chinese cultural practitioners to not only preserve traditions, but also showcase fresh and innovative presentations of Chinese art forms. I am confident that this year’s line-up will continue to inspire more people to get involved in preserving and passing down a cultural legacy distinctive to Singapore,” said Chairman of SCCC, Mr Chua Thian Poh.

Kicking off the three-week long fiesta will be a brand new theatre performance that pays tribute to iconic comedians of Singapore’s past and present. A brainchild of popular local theatre group Toy Factory, Masters of Comedy (天才谐星) promises to entertain the audience with candid characters who trace the comedy stars over the years, from the respected Bai Yan and comic duo Wang Sha Ye Feng, to Jack Neo, Mark Lee and Hui Ge. Combining various elements of comedic dialogue, crosstalk, song and dance, be set to take a trip into the dramatic evolution of local culture in Singapore, and get ready for lots of laughter.

Back by popular demand, Sing.Lang Concert [“Sing.浪”演唱会] brings to the stage a new entourage of our local talents. Taking over the creative reins this year will be executive producer Ruth Ling, who is widely known as the music producer to the stars, and co-creative director Jimmy Ye, one of our renowned homegrown music maestros. The title of the concert embodies the Chinese term for waves, which is representative of the different waves of artists coming together such as Benjamin Kheng from favourite local band, The Sam Willows, and evergreen singer Maggie Teng, one of our earliest musical talents to break into the regional Mandopop scene. It also puts the spotlight on our local talents who have been making waves in the music industry, with the likes of Sing! China finalists Joanna Dong and Olinda Cho.

Chinese culture lovers are also in for a treat with cultural programmes that showcase the perfect harmony of both traditional and contemporary Chinese art forms. Those interested in the performing arts can look forward to a performance by Dance Ensemble Singapore, which will showcase the transformation of different traditional and contemporary dance styles infused with local cultural elements. The performance will highlight the seamless mix of the strength in martial arts and the grace of classical Chinese dance and contemporary styles. An assembly of local poets will also present a fresh take on poetry reading that promises an auditory and visual treat, with the merging of Chinese poetry reading with live music on the harmonica and pipa, and a short animated movie adaptation.

Dance in Euphoria

Other exciting cultural programmes that the public can look forward to include an exhibition on Singapore’s letterpress and printing history, a workshop on Chinese opera with Nick Shen, to a quest at the SCCC with its first-ever upsized escape experience that will definitely satisfy the thrill seekers. The young are not left out, with wushu classes, arts and craft courses uncovering the story behind the 12 zodiacs, and workshops that marvel at the beauty of the Chinese language through interactive and fun activities.

On the offerings of the CE 2018, CEO of the SCCC, Mr Low Sze Wee said, “The variety of programmes offered at this year’s Cultural Extravaganza is a testament to the creativity and passion of our local Chinese cultural practitioners, and we want everyone to feel this creativity and passion. The local Chinese arts and culture are evolving with our dynamic society. The public’s continuing support of our local art and cultural scene is the best way to ensure that we have a vibrant living legacy for future generations in Singapore.”

In celebration of the SCCC’s first anniversary, members of the public will be able to share their well-wishes for the centre via a digital guest book. Launched using an augmented-reality enabled phone application, visitors will be able to see their greetings come to life on a three-dimensional interactive multimedia art installation situated at the SCCC Ho Bee Concourse from 11 May 2018 to February 2019.
