Born in Vietnam in 1975 and brought up in Denmark, Danh Vo’s conceptual artworks and installations often draw upon elements of personal lived experience to explore broader historical, social or political themes, particularly those relating to the history of Vietnam at the close of the twentieth century. Vo was the winner of the Hugo Boss Prize, New York (2012), the BlauOrange Kunstpreis der Deutschen Volksbanken und Raiffeisenbanken, Berlin, Germany (2007) and was a nominee for the Nationalgalerie Prize for Young Art, Berlin, Germany (2009). He represented Denmark at the 2015 Venice Biennale and also participated in the group exhibition of the 2013 Venice Biennale.

The site-specific exhibition will be installed on the roof of the old City Hall building. A continuation of Vo’s existing practice, it will explore, via the artist’s own history, the broader issues of cross-cultural identity as well as cultural hierarchies. It will also be the first time the artist is presenting interactive work.

The installation is the first of the Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Commission as part of the Gallery’s Imagining Southeast Asia programme. The Roof Garden will feature annual site-specific commissions by leading artists that relate to the curatorial narratives of the museum’s collections and permanent exhibitions.
