In celebration of Singapore’s 54th year of independence, Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall (SYSNMH) will present an array of free public programmes from 9 to 10 August 2019 in conjunction with National Day 2019.

Heritage Hurray! invites the public to acquaint themselves with Singapore’s rich cultural scene, and provides Singaporeans with various touch points to immerse themselves in our shared heritage. The programme for Heritage Hurray! will include a community art market featuring a curation of both local and overseas artisans, heritage trails around Balestier that unearth the lesser known stories of the precinct, storytelling sessions by local authors and veteran storytellers, as well as interactive thematic craft workshops and talks presented by local and overseas artisans and designers. All participants of Heritage Hurray! will also stand to receive a National Day Fun Pack.

1. Community Art Market

Discover local enterprises, talented crafters and quirky artisans at the memorial hall’s first ever pop-up community art market! Treat yourself to a trendy new homeware or pick up some quirky handcrafted soap bars, and shop till you drop this National Day weekend from beloved local and overseas brands.
2. Sharing Session: Design and Sustainability with Beatrix Ong

The Memorial Hall is proud to present an intimate sharing session by London-based designer and descendant of Chinese revolutionary Dr Sun Yat Sen, Beatrix Ong who will speak about her journey in sustainable design and craftsmanship, and her upcoming collaboration with the memorial hall.
3. Ang Ku Kueh & Kueh Lapis Vinyl Toy Painting Workshop

Reflecting the traditional Chinese belief that tortoises will usher longevity, good fortune and prosperity, the ang ku kueh, or commonly known as the Red Tortoise Cake, has a chewy consistency with a sweet and smooth paste at its centre. On the other hand, the kueh lapis, an expression of Southeast Asia’s benevolent hospitality, is a multi-layered savoury cake. Both are amongst Singapore’s most well-loved traditional snacks that have withstood the test of time. Unleash your creativity and join homegrown design studio and label, Wheniwasfour in a whimsical art jamming experience as you design your very own ang ku kueh or kueh lapis vinyl toy!
4. Lion City Sketching Workshop

From traditional Perakanan shophouses to towering skyscrapers, what are your favourite landmarks of our beautiful Lion City? Join Thai artists Ohm Chongthanatrakol and Tai Sanguanpong from Just Sketch in this Lion City Sketching Workshop, and learn how to capture Singapore’s rich architectural heritage in your very own black and white sketch!
5. Heritage Kueh Soap Crafting Demonstration

Specialising in handcrafted cold-processed soap, Crafter’s Studio prides itself on using only naturally sourced ingredients in its organic soap products. 6. Icons of Singapore Doodling Workshop

With a passion for drawing that piqued since she first learned how to hold a pencil, Stephanie Raphaela Ho founded Muffinsaurs Studio and has since made a name for herself with her stunning animal wall murals and quirky illustrations. Join Stephanie in this fun and light-hearted doodling workshop and learn to sketch quintessentially Singaporean icons such as the beloved Merlion and the awe-inspiring Marina Bay Sands!
7. Art for Singapore Workshop

Discover the stories behind our little red dot with our popular storytelling sessions conducted by local authors and veteran storytellers. Embark on a literary adventure with heart-warming stories such as What’s Inside the Red Box by Phua San San, a whimsical tale about Singapore’s Founding Father, the late Mr Lee Kwan Yew and his famous red briefcase.
10. Balestier Heritage Trail – National Day Edition!
