June Holiday Activities At White Sands

Date: 25 May to 30 June 2018
Time: 11am to 9.30pm
Venue: White Sands

From Friday, 25 May to Saturday, 30 June 2018, White Sands will be running The Starmazing Space Adventure. This is the first ever space-themed campaign built in collaboration with schools nation-wide for shoppers and space enthusiasts to learn about outer space, constellations, planets and the universe right in the heartlands of Singapore. White Sands will offer a range of activities from shopper giveaways to a unique indoor space exhibit made from balloons and lights that families and the little ones will definitely enjoy.

Led and designed by students from nine schools and clubs island-wide with a passion for all things astronomical, White Sands has worked closely with students from National University of Singapore, Anglo Chinese School, Singapore Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Hwa Chong Institution, Nanyang Junior College, Anderson-Serangoon Junior College, Republic Polytechnic and Astronomy United to bring the space adventure to life. Running from 15 to 25 June, some of the exciting and educational activities include a maze of the universe built with balloons, lights, and handmade planets, alongside a mass stargazing session with supporting talks about space.

Mr Dennis Cheong, General Manager of Century Square and White Sands, shares, “We are thrilled to bring together students in celebration of a shared passion where they can work with White Sands to showcase their vast knowledge about space with the wider community. We believe in serving with heart in everything we do, and I’m confident the mass stargazing session will unite us all and make a positive impact as we experience the beauty of our universe in front of our very eyes!”

Shoppers can immerse themselves in a mesmerizing journey of space at White Sands through the custom-built balloon maze and exhibition located in the main atrium of the mall. The experience will be filled with interesting facts about the universe, astrophotography of shining constellations, and balloon sculptures of animals that have been flown into outer space to learn more about life in space. Open daily from 11am to 9.30pm, shoppers can purchase tickets from the level 2 Customer Service Counter.

On 16 June, have an astronomical experience at the mass star gazing session jointly hosted by students from the nine participating schools and astronomy clubs at the field beside White Sands. Other mini stargazing sessions will also be held on 17 and 23 June. All sessions are free with a pre=exploratory talk at the Pasir Ris Public Library by participating astronomy clubs from 7pm onwards.

There are separate space craft workshops and talks hosted by different astronomy clubs where students will discuss the universe, its workings and various theories behind the age-old question of whether Aliens really do exist. Shoppers are welcome to join the sessions on 16, 17, 23, 24 and 30 June at the Paris Ris Public Library on level 4 of the mall. Some of the topics that will be covered include:

  • A Discourse on Aliens
  • Understanding the Universe
  • Exploring Galaxies
  • Our Backyard- The Solar System
  • DIY Astrolabes & Mini 3D Solar system

“To take an idea and make it a reality is such a rewarding experience, and without White Sands’ support in driving this initiative, we wouldn’t have been able to build such a spectacular adventure for the community,” said Abdul Hariz the Head Representative from Astronomy United, a student-led club consisting of a network of student representatives from various school astronomy clubs across Singapore. “Collaborating with different schools and students in pursuing our shared passion for space is an experience we’ll always cherish,” said Clarence Liu, a final year Physics undergraduate of the National University of Singapore and President of the NUS Astronomical Society.

Throughout the Starmazing Space Adventure campaign, AMperkz members who spend $150 can redeem a space-related gift at White Sands, such as a pair of binoculars, a night light star projector or a toy telescope to continue their galactic exploration from the comfort of home, available from 25 May onwards while stocks last.
