Decades of Dreams

Undergoing timely remodels and refreshes over the years to reflect current architectural and interior design trends, the Barbie® Dreamhouse has become one of the world’s most popular and recognizable ‘homes’.

The iconic evolution sees the original Dreamhouse transformed from a simple fold-out studio with cardboard furniture to a lavish three-story abode with a pool, elevator, and light and sound features.

The Importance of Doll Play

With Barbie®, doll play extends beyond the fun and the aspirational dream world that the Dreamhouse evokes. Did you know that playing with dolls can help to stimulate the brain?

In a multi-year research partnership with Barbie®, Cardiff University conducted its first neuroimaging study to investigate doll play’s short-term and long-term effects. The study was commissioned in 2020 and analysed 42 children – 20 boys and 22 girls, aged between 4 to 8 years old, with complete data captured from 33 of them.

In the study’s second year, researchers then investigated the importance of what children say. While the children play, researchers observe that they use increased language about others’ thoughts and emotions when playing alone with dolls. Dr Sarah Gerson, Neuroscientist at Cardiff University, found that doll play can help children rehearse social interactions and develop empathy and social skills, which are essential for future success in our social world.

“When children create imaginary worlds and role play with dolls, they communicate at first out loud and then internalize the message about others’ thoughts, emotions and feelings,” said researcher Dr Sarah Gerson. “This can have long-lasting positive effects on children, such as driving higher social and emotional processing rates and building social skills like empathy that can become internalized to build and form lifelong habits.”
