Flash cards is a cheap and useful way to educate your toddlers as compared to expensive electronic gadget toys in the market these days.

With the limited time I have to teach my children, I have recently try using flashcards.  This is one of the method use by Ashton’s toddler enrichment program at the Little Neuro Tree.  Till date, a lazy mummy like me only manage to DIY 3 sets of flash cards.

These are some of the guidelines to noted while making flash cards for your toddlers.

  • Use either pictorial or words per cards, do not combine the both in the cards
  • Make flash cards using paper size A6 and above.  You might not be able to capture your toddler’s attention if it is too small
  • Group specfic theme together.  For instance, recently I make a set of flash cards untitled “Christmas” with all things that are related to Christmas like ornaments, Christmas tree, Santa Claus etc..
  • Do not compile to many items in a set as too thick a set makes toddlers lost interest and concentration

Why is Flash Cards Useful

  • It serves as another alternative to books as flashcard and books serves the same purpose - that is for the toddler to learn
  • Enhance the toddler’s memory
  • Aids toddler in recognizing words and items around them in daily lives

Here’s a link whereby you can get to download pictures for your flashcards - http://www.eslflashcards.com/

If your toddler is not interested in reading books, why not try using the flashcards as a form of educational tools now.

Thanks for the important tips! I have been sharing with few parents to use flashcards to enhance their child’s memory. Actually I do plan to write an article about it too. The website that you have given does offer a variety of flashcards for parents. I will link this post to mine once I’m writing an article related flashcards!

I completely agree! Flash cards are great because it forces parents to be more interactive than, say, video games. When my children do play video games, which is not often, they are completely engulfed in the game. It is simply an activity between them and the television. Using flash cards is an excellent way to interact with your children and educate them first hand. I also find it amazing the number of flashcards available today.

    Hi Seth,

Thanks for dropping a line. Do agree that children nowadays are so engross in television and computer games. So we parents really have to play our part to limit them on that and find other activities for them. :)
