Tips on Potty Training

I have read through the potty training ebook that I have bought sometime back.  The program indicates that if we are going to potty train our children, we need to dedicate 3 days of full attention. Hmm…I think I need to find a weekend whereby I do not have any commitments, send Ashlyn to my mum’s place and embark on the training and most probably that will be during October.

However, before you potty train your toddler, you should check for their sign of readiness.  A child shows signs of readiness when he or she…

  1. is having fairly regular bowel movements
  2. can identify the urge to pee and poo
  3. able to hold his or her pee for awhile
  4. start showing interest in toilet
  5. behave like an adult, he or she can imitate grown-up’s action as in brushing teeth and helping out in simple chores
  6. not extremely negative

Some tips to prepare for toilet training

  1. Let your child get accustomed to sitting on the potty.  Let him or her sit with clothes on and then ask whether he or she wants to sit with bare bottom.
  2. Do not punished, forced or threatened the toddler.
  3. Read story books on potty training
  4. Watch cartoon teaching on potty training.

Here’s a video clip from youtube that I am showing Ashton to prepare him for potty training and I find it quite cool and cute. (This video clip is especially meant for potty training boys)

What are your unique methods of potty training your stubborn child? I am trying all kinds of methods teaching Ashton how to poop in the potty and that’s the only hurdle he has to clear to be fully potty train.

my daughter is only 5 months old when we tried to place her in our toilet bowl because she was suffering from constipation that time. It was also the time i was given an idea to buy her own potty. since then, whenever we can see she’s “pushing” we will immediately place her in her potty…and there!!! she goes…

she is in her 7th month and we still do the same thing whenever she poop..i just have to figure it out whenever she wee-wee

    Hi Jenell,

The difficulties training my son makes me eager to start my daughter early too. My daughter is 1 year old and I am trying to get her to sit on the potty too. Sometimes she is willing but sometimes she is not but definitely more receptive to potty than my son. :)
