Potty Training Boys…

I wonder why is it so difficult to potty train boys in comparison to girls in general. I have had difficulty potty training Ashton and my sister-in-law finds it difficult with her son too.
I have been trying various method to potty train Ashton but to no avail. I patiently and diligently bring him in to the potty every morning and get him to sit in the hope that if he makes it a habit, he will poo in the potty but to it was useless. When he wants to poo, he will stand up, then cry and stubbornly refuse to sit down again. He will scream and cry till I relent and help him put on a diaper. Sigh! I guess it’s time I take some action. I surf the net and came across some materials to help parents teach potty and it seems to match what I am looking for. I decide that I will take it put and try. So parents who have difficulty with potty training…I will log down the potty training process and share it.

I didn’t know that it’s difficult to get a boy to sit on a potty. My mum managed quite well when she was a baby sitter. In school, we have a helper to do this. So I don’t have a direct experience like that. I do have children who refused to go with the helper and I managed to bring them. They showed sad faces when they need to go toilet. I would tell the children that they are now big boy/girl and they need to sit on the toilet instead of wearing diaper. So, I would give them a choice, “do you want to be a big boy to go toilet or a baby that wears diaper?”. Most of the time, they will choose to be big boy and compromised.

Dr. Pete Stavinoha, a child psychologist at the hospital where I work - Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, Texas - just released a book called Stress-Free Potty Training (sounds good already, doesn’t it?!). His book suggests we train children according to their personalities. What motivates a goal-directed child may be different than what works best for a strong-willed child. The book then offers specific tips for each of five distinct personality types.
