Let’s Welcome Year 2009 With Our New Parenting Resolution!

Date December 30, 2008

Time Flies and we are approaching 2009.  Every year, I will make it a point to make my resolution.  Two years back, I started making 2 sets of resolutions.  My personal ones and my parenting resolutions.

I am not a perfect mum but I always try to do my best to improve myself.  I reflected on myself and realized that I lost my patience on Ashton as he grows and as he becomes more and more stubborn.  So being more patient is one of my resolution for 2009.

Here’s my full set of resolutions:

  1. Be patient with my children and keep my cool
  2. Adopt a more loving approach
  3. Make the effort to spend more quality time with them
  4. Love them for who they are
  5. Curb my short-tempered when dealing with my children
  6. try to fulfill their emotion needs.
  7. Talk to them more to understand them better

What’s your parenting resolutions of the year?  I wish all of you a Happy New Year and hope that you enjoy a a more fulfilling year to come. :)

Hope you enjoy reading The New Age Parents and I look forward to have you here with me in the coming year.  I will continue to share my experiences as my children grows.

6 Simple Ways to Appreciate Your Child

Date December 17, 2008

A book in Kinokuniya caught my attention when I was shopping few days ago.  It is about appreciating your child.  As far as I know, I read many parenting books on parenting tips, unlock your child’s potential to bring out the genius in them etc.  But books about appreciating our child are rare.  I did not really read the book anyway as I was too lazy to start a new book especially a thick one without finishing my current book.  However, the title of the book alone makes me realized that the root of parenting is to start appreciating your child. Share Your Best Parenting Tips!

Date December 14, 2008

Let’s share your parenting tips with other parents and parents to be in just a few words.

The New Age Parents will be hosting a column to allow parents to get in touch and share their parenting ideas to make parenting a easier task.

Write in to us sharing your best parenting tips in just a 3 to 4 sentences.

Let me start with my own little parenting tip that work.

“When our child fancies a toy and requests us to buy it, we avoid buying for them on the spot.  This will prevent them from developing the undesirable habit of getting what they want.  Instead we always tell them to bid the toys goodbye and if the toy is really something good, we will go back to buy it another day ourselves”.

What’s yours?  We look forward to learn your little tip too.

Write in to The New Age Parents at elaine@thenewageparents.com and cc to elainelau0612@hotmail.com before the 20 Dec to share your idea. :) Please include your name so that we could have it publish with your tips.

Myopia

Myopia is commonly known as “short-sightedness”.  In Singapore, many of the children developed myopia by the age of 12 years old and we have been seeing more and more children wearing spectacles at a young age of probably 6-7 years old.

What are the factors causing myopia and how can we protect our child against it though it cannot be totally prevented?

Encourage the Little Entreprenuers

One fine day, my niece who is only 13 years old came up to me and told me that she wants to be an investor and a business woman.  She was babbling away on being financially free and not working for people.  I was surprised.  What a different mindset.  I still remember vividly the moments when my friends and me shared our dreams during childhood.  It was either being a teacher, doctor, lawyer..etc… Not one of us ever dream about being our own boss.  However, there is no denial that she is going in the correct direction with the right financial literacy about the theory of financial freedom.  This motivates me to give her some financial support to start her little internet business.

Flash cards is a cheap and useful way to educate your toddlers as compared to expensive electronic gadget toys in the market these days.

With the limited time I have to teach my children, I have recently try using flashcards.  This is one of the method use by Ashton’s toddler enrichment program at the Little Neuro Tree.  Till date, a lazy mummy like me only manage to DIY 3 sets of flash cards. Read the rest of this entry »
