Love for Books…
April 29, 2008

Ashton is 2 years old now and he loves to read. I hope his sister, Ashlyn inherits that too. Ashton and Ashlyn now shares their own book shelf with ample of books. Hmm… I thought it would be a good idea for me to set up a children rental bookstore when they grow up. If I could count, he has read up to about more than 100 books till date.
Prenatal Education
I guess its probably because I read to him even before he was born. I am not sure if he appreciates that but he seems to respond well to that.
Ashton’s First Book

His first book was a simple animal book made of plastic. He was teething then and I guess he use the book more as a teether than anything else. Now Ashlyn is doing the same.
The turning point

His love for reading all started when I took him to Montana (USA) when I went for a business trip with my husband. Since I wasn’t working, we spent ample of time at Borders, which is near our neighbourhood and we will read together. This has thus became a routine to him.
When we came back to Singapore, we were surprised that Ashton could actually sit down on his own quietly and flip book after book. He was 9 months old then and he enjoys doing it. When he is one year old, he could read some simple word book independently.
Till now, I still spend a great deal buying lots of books for the 2 of them. Ashton still enjoys reading and now he reads some short stories to himself (with some words missing here and there though) when I don’t have time for him.
As for Ashlyn darling, she would always fight for books and crawled around the bed during bedtime stories. I hope one day, she would grow to love to read too.

When I first read to Ashton, he also appear quite impatient and jump about like a monkey. I try to persist reading to him even if he don’t listen. Eventually, he will start reading. u can try lah. but at the initial stage u will look like an idiot. just like you are reading to the wall.
I taught him ABC this way too. I keep reading A-Z everyday to him while he plays. He don’t seems to be listening but after sometime, he starts reading it out himself.
