After my write-up on the importance of breastfeeding, one of my readers, Athey, mention something very important, that is the exhaustion and the stress during the initial start of breastfeeding.  I do agree with her and understand how she felt as I have being through it.  Imagine having to stay-up and breastfeed the baby when you just had a tiring time in the labour ward and the first thing you ever need is rest.

That’s the reason why, I would very much like to address the need for a mum to maintain her sanity in the process of breastfeeding and I would like to highlight to the new age daddies out there that your help is deeply appreciated and your encouragement does help a great deal as the determination to breastfeed might waver due to lack of sleep and hormonal changes.

Daddies, this is how you can help….

  • Bring your wife some food and drinks while she breastfeed as she gets hungry and thirsty quite easily during breastfeeding and plently of fluid is recommended.
  • When your wife is about to give up or feeling depressed, try to encourage her and remind her the good of breastfeeding and how can it give the baby a good start.
  • A woman who is recuperating from giving birth and at the same time trying to breastfeed might be going through some stress and might be depressed.  If she has mood swings, try to be more understanding.  Lend a listening ear rather than get into an arguement with her.
  • If your wife try to tell you how hard it is for her to cope with herself and the baby, give assurance and support.
  • When breastfeeding is not required, help her take over the baby and provide her as much time to rest as possible as sufficient rest is very important.
  • Get mummy to pump-out the milk so that you can help with the mid-night feed.
  • Help to take care of the older children (if you have more that one child)
  • Never discourage her when she needs to breastfeed in the public

Very importantly, shower lots of love, concern. Give lots of hugs for assurance. Be patient and understanding to help your wife through the journey of breastfeeding. This is a very good way for you to get to know your baby as well. It’s a time for father and baby bonding too. Cheers to our wonderful new age fathers out there for their wonderful support!
