There is no denial that television is such a major presence in a child’s life. With these little brains which absorb like sponges, we must therefore be wary of the programs that they are watching. Television programs and commercials often convey images that are violent, stereotyped, misleading and confusing to a young child. It is therefore important that parents and caregivers help young children develop the appropriate television habit.
These are the following things that could be done:
- Choose programmes that are educational - Choose programs that helps the child develop either academically or socially. For instance, choosing a programme that teach numbers, nursery ryhmes, art or programs that reflect good social values like helping others and making friends.
- Watch TV programs with the children - By watching TV with your child, you could explain to them what’s happening and at the same time, it allows you to bond better with your child.
- Set time limits - Limit your child to only 1 to 2 hours of television programmes per day. Do not allow television set in childrens’ room.
- Set a good example yourself - Set a good example yourself. If you do not want your child to be a TV addict, do not be a potato couch by sitting in front of the TV during all your free time.
- Get meaningful VCD or DVDs - There are some very good educational VCDs out there. If there are no suitable programs for the children, replace them with educational VCDs.
- Give them alternative activities - Show them that there are various activities that they can be engaged in. For instance, playing with their favourite toy, draw, paint or do something outdoor and it can be more fun then watching TV.
Watching television can be useful but it can be unhealthy if it becomes an habit or addiction. Allow television watching for your child in moderation.

I agree that we need to limit the time for their TV watching. The extra free time should be filled with beneficial activities that can help them in their development as well as cultivate a good habit and interest of learning!
