Ashton has been throwing tantrums lately and it getting rather out of control. While the whole family were having breakfast yesterday, his sweet and loving demeanor morphs into some montrous behaviour.  He will start lying down on the ground in the public or sits in the middle of the carpark.  Yesterday, I even noticed some onlookers shaking their heads while they saw the way Ashton behaves.

As a mum, I was of course angry with the way he behaves and at the same time embarassed by these incidents. How I wish I could scream and spank him.  I controlled myself anyway as I knew doing this will make the matter worse.

After a couple of times, I start realizing that behind the tantrums, there is always a reason.  Take for instance, that morning at the breakfast, he has a stomachache. As I am currently potty training Ashton, I let him go diapers free but has gotten use to poo in his diapers and refused to poo without it.  When I wore a diaper for him, it solves the problem.  So I tell him: “Next time when you need to poo, just tell mummy so that I can put on a diaper for you”.

After taking care of my children, I observe a few reasons why toddlers misbehave. If you look into the root of the problem and handle them according, task will have been easier and we could discipline them more effectively rather than screaming our heads off.

These are some of the reasons for misbehaving that I seen in my children:

  1. Siblings Rivalry
  2. Tiredness and the toddler probably needs a nap
  3. Sick/ Feeling unwell
  4. Feeling Bored
  5. Hunger
  6. Testing their limits and wants to exert their independence
  7. Unable to communicate their thoughts well
  8. Attention Seeking without knowing that by misbehaving, they are seeking negative attention from parents
  9. Change in a child’s routine
  10. In the midst of potty training as they might have toilet phobia

What I did with Ashton is to catch his positive behavior and compliment him for that letting him know what is the correct way of behaving.

Thats the way to do it! Toddlers will take what ever attention they can get so it is much better that that attention is positive

    Hi Tracy,

Welcome to my blog. Yes, I strongly believe in complimenting good behaviors as it builds in a positive mindset in them too. Catching and reprimanding bad behavior might demoralized the children more than it motivates them.
